Products & Plans

A product (also called a plan) is a pricing package that bundles services, subscription fees, and usage rates together. Every customer is assigned one product that determines what they can use and what they pay.

Anatomy of a Plan

A plan consists of:

ComponentDescription
NameDisplay name shown to customers (e.g., "Starter", "Pro", "Enterprise")
Subscription feeRecurring monthly charge (can be $0), plus an optional discounted annual price. When a plan has an annual price, each customer chooses a Monthly or Annual term when assigned.
Service pricingPer-unit rates for each included service. You can also restrict which items are available on a given plan — for example, block access to expensive models on lower-tier plans (see below).
Included quotasOptional free usage allowances per service
Trial variantOptional free trial version with fair usage limits and a per-customer time limit (see Free Trials)

Creating a Plan

  1. Go to Product Catalog → Plans tab
  2. Click Create Plan
  3. Configure:
    • Plan name (e.g., "Pro Plan")
    • Subscription fee — the monthly price, plus an optional discounted annual price
    • Services: Select which services are included
    • Item pricing: Set per-unit prices for each item within each service
  4. Save

Restricting Items by Plan

Not every item needs to be available on every plan. To block a customer from using a specific item, mark that item as Prohibited in the plan's pricing configuration. Items that are simply omitted from the plan fall back to the service's default rate — they are not blocked.

To restrict an item:

  1. Open the plan's pricing for the relevant service
  2. Add the item you want to control
  3. Set its pricing mode to Prohibited

When the customer's application sends a charge for a prohibited item, the billing engine rejects it.

Example — restricting expensive AI models to higher tiers:

ItemBasic ($29/mo)Pro ($99/mo)Enterprise (Custom)
GEMINI-2.5-FLASH$0.50/1M$0.40/1M$0.30/1M
GEMINI-3Prohibited$2.00/1M$1.50/1M
GEMINI-3-PROProhibitedProhibited$4.00/1M

In this setup:

  • Basic customers can only use GEMINI-2.5-FLASH. Charges for GEMINI-3 and GEMINI-3-PRO are explicitly rejected.
  • Pro customers can use GEMINI-2.5-FLASH and GEMINI-3, but GEMINI-3-PRO is rejected.
  • Enterprise customers can use all models.

This creates a natural upgrade path — customers who need access to more capable (and more expensive) models must upgrade to a higher-tier plan.

Omitting ≠ blocking

If you remove an item from a plan's pricing list entirely (instead of marking it Prohibited), the charge is not rejected. The billing engine falls back to the service's default per-unit rate. Always use Prohibited to block.

Plan Pricing Examples

Usage-Only Plan (No Subscription)

Perfect for pay-as-you-go APIs:

  • Subscription: $0/month
  • LLM Tokens: $2.00 per 1M tokens
  • Speech-to-Text: $0.006 per minute

Subscription + Usage

Most common for SaaS products:

  • Subscription: $49/month
  • Includes 100M free tokens
  • Additional tokens: $1.00 per 1M

Flat-Rate Subscription

For predictable pricing:

  • Subscription: $99/month
  • Includes 1M tokens (no overage charges)
  • Additional services disabled or charged at premium rates

Tiered Pricing (coming soon)

Multi-tier volume pricing is on the roadmap. The planned shape:

Tier 1: 0 – 100M tokens → $3.00/1M
Tier 2: 100M – 1B → $2.00/1M
Tier 3: 1B+ → $1.00/1M

Once available, the billing engine will track cumulative usage per billing period and switch to the next tier the moment a customer crosses a threshold. Until then, each plan uses a single per-unit price — optionally combined with a free quota and a flat overage rate.

Cloning Plans Between Environments

You can clone a plan from sandbox to live (or vice versa):

  1. Open the plan in the source environment
  2. Click Clone
  3. Select the target environment
  4. Review and confirm

This copies all pricing configuration, making it easy to test in sandbox before deploying to production.

A price you derived from vendor cost is copied as the rule rather than as the number it worked out to, so the copy prices from the target environment's own vendor cost. Record that cost in the target environment before you copy: where the two environments record different costs the copy charges a different price, and where the target records none the copy is refused and nothing is written there.

Multiple Plans

Most SaaS businesses offer multiple plans for different customer segments:

PlanSubscriptionToken RateBest For
Free Trial$0 (14 days)Free up to 10MEvaluation
Starter$29/mo$3.00/1MSmall projects
Pro$99/mo + 500M free$2.00/1MGrowing businesses
EnterpriseCustom$1.00/1MHigh-volume users

Assigning Plans to Customers

When you create a customer, you assign them a plan. You can change their plan at any time:

  1. Open the customer detail page
  2. Click Change Plan
  3. Select the new plan
  4. Confirm

The change takes effect immediately, and the charges follow at the customer's next billing run, after midnight in their time zone: the unused part of the current subscription fee is refunded, and the new plan is charged for the rest of the billing period. On the annual term, the same charge also covers the next eleven periods, as changing a customer's plan explains.
